What To See And Do

A two thousand year old shrine the Janardhanaswamy Temple, a short distance away from the beach. The Sivagiri Mutt, founded by the great Hindu reformer and philosopher Sree Narayana Guru (1856 – 1928) is also close by. The Samadhi (the final resting place) of the Guru here attracts thousands of devotees every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days – 30th December to 1st January. Sree Narayana Guru propagated the ideology: “one caste, one religion and one god”, in a society torn by the taboos of caste system.

By Air:

Varkala does not have its own airport! Visitors who prefer flying can make it to the Trivandrum International Airport which is around 51km from to reach Varkala Beach by air.

By Train:

Varkala Railway Station at a distance of less than 5km serves as the ideal stoppage to reach Varkala Beach by train.

By Road:

If you are planning to reach Varkala Beach by road, you should make it to the main bus stand in Varkala hamlet. The village is around 47km away from NH-47 and has regular buses from Kochi, Trivandrum, and other major cities in Kerala.
